The minds of thieves...

Not sure what thieves are thinking when they do things to individuals. I am one of those people that have very specific spending habits. There are only a few stores and even fewer websites that I generally buy or order from. I also document EVERYTHING. My checking acct is balanced at least once a week and always to the penny.

This has happened before, but unlike the previous issue, this wasn't my credit card... This was my debit/atm card. All I can say is that I highly apprectiate my credit union for paying attention to my specific habits. Because not only did they catch it immediately and call me to ask questions, but my funds are still safe for that very reason. I have my guesses of where my number was 'borrowed' but there's no real way to know. Ah well... Such is life.

I think it is going to be pretty telling when we discover it's our elected officials, doing it under the scope of national security (yes, Republicans and Democrats alike).

Oh wait, that's right...they do it out in the open...and pass laws that make it legal. Waiting for the GTM (Government Teller Machine)...the one that just takes your debit card, and on your receipt it says, "You will soon be receiving a great deal of money." :)

Justice - This is not a Govn't issue. This is a personal thief issue. This is not a political article. Please stay on topic within reason.

It was satire that was too close to the story. I apologize if I offended you.

I had someone take over my debit card as well, but the bank caught it fairly quick. Most national banks have a plethora of fraud checks in place and additional ones you can add (like notification if a charge occurs over a certain dollar amount). I would certainly suggest everyone has as many fraud alerts set up as they have available. It doesn't limit your spending, only alerts you that you spent it! :)

No problem. I'm usually just fine with satire. As you can see from many of my other articles and comments on others articles. This one however, is very serious to me. When someone (specifically those that I should be able to trust) hits my wallet... Not a happy camper. I do have fraud alerts. That's how I found out about this before I balanced my acct. I'm EXTREMELY anal about my money and knowing how much I have... Down to the penny. Most people think I'm rediculous. I even have a spreadsheet of what bills are coming and how much they should be. I also have another spreadsheet set up to tell me how much I should have left over with the normal expenditures taken into account. I balance my account at least once a week.

"Most people think I'm rediculous. I even have a spreadsheet of what bills are coming and how much they should be."

You are most certainly not ridiculous! And ignore anyone who thinks that you are (for this particular issue...I don't know you well enough to say it in general.) :)

You are the only one who can really protect yourself, along with the fraud alerts of course. You hope you can trust people, but it's just not the case, so the second best thing is to stay vigilant...which it sounds like you are lucky...no, smart...in that you are currently doing so.

I ahve yet to see an article that someone DOESN'T turn into a rant about how terrible the government is lol

The debit card protection is why I just CAN'T wrap my brain around why some people will not use them... and always carry cash.

(Vote that up yourself, Ms. Aubrey. Usually most authors offer the first comment and first vote, to put it on the radar...)

My wife went to one of the branches of a major liquor store around here, and made a purchase. It was her first time ever buying anything from these guys. Two days later it was on the local news that their computer had been hacked and several thousand credit card numbers had been stolen.

Grrrr... We changed the card and were none the worse for wear, but it's getting trickier out there!

Glad to see you were unharmed.

One day the doorbell rang. A beautiful young Russian woman stood at the door and announced she was the wife that i had ordered a few weeks ago. I explained to my wife that it was an obvious case of credit card theft. There was no way sober i would have ordered a mail order bride for $10,000 at 2:30 am. I disputed the charge and the credit card company removed the charge. I don't know how people can do this sort of thing. Amazing. It was tough sending her back, my two kids wanted to let her stay but i explained she had a family of her own in Russia. They are still upset.

People are selfish. They seem to think that if they CAN take something from someone else... they SHOULD. Regardless of how it impacts them.
I had some stuff stolen out of my car a couple times... they're lucky I never caught them lol

I dont get. Where does this attitude of entitlement come from? (Not getting political here, but...)How does someone wake up in the morning and say to themselves "That person worked hard to get what they have, but I want it too, so Im just gonna take it from them!"? Thieves, like hackers, should be taken out in the street and shot. Those that hack so they can steal should be given an acid bath. JMHO

Northern Girl

I'm not sure the attitude of entitlement came from anywhere. I'm sure that when the first cave man came back from the hunt and left his fresh haunch of venison unattended, some other rat-bastard stole it.

It's a survival trait that has just transformed from stealing to survive to stealing to have cool stuff. We're not living in caves any more, and most people know to control their baser tendencies. But others don't. We should beat them when we catch them. (Damn. That's a baser tendency.)

While I agree somewhat, I have a hunch that this was a Dr's office employee (or rude @ss manager) that stole my number. That to me, would suggest entitlement.

"That to me, would suggest entitlement."

But in entitlement, the person feels it is their right. Clandestine measures to achieve their goal need not be employed. The fact that they stole the information would lead me to believe they knew it was wrong and either thought they would get even with you (being that you described the manager as a rude-@ss), or felt the opportunity to take your money had a greater reward than the possibility of them being caught. Either way it sucks to high heaven.

I once had a woman steal the carbons (yes, back in the 80s) from a trash can and order $400 worth of lingerie. I laughed when the credit card company asked if I was SURE my wife wasn't trying to surprise me. I told them it would have been one heck of a surprise since we didn't have the money to spend. The funniest part? The woman had it sent to her home. So she was caught... just the opportunity to do it. Why lingerie, I can't imagine...that just seemed extremely odd at the time...buy hysterically funny when I think back on it.

The manager wasn't rude until I asked her if the whole card number is on the receipts that they keep and have on file.

And the manager was upset by that? You have every right to know. And every right to not have your card information in a non-secure environment. I would think a manager would have to understand that.

I also would think that the manager would want to find out if one of their employees is a theif!.... That is, unless it's the manager doing the theiving....

People do feel entitled... for whatever reason. Otherwise they wouldn't steal. They believe that the ends justifies the means to the worst extreme. That's why usually thieves target people they don't know. They don't have to be worried about the consequences to that person... they ahve they're new stuff, and that's what's important. People are just so selfish and only care about what happens to them. Hence the stories of people robbing other people or stores and explaining it's because the "big bad economy monster" came after them and they have kids they gotta feed.... nevermind whether the person they're stealing from can feed their kids anymore... who cares about that person's family... my own is now taken care of. I wonder if they would feel the same way if someone came and did that to THEM the next day?

Thieves, like hackers, should be taken out in the street and shot. Those that hack so they can steal should be given an acid bath. JMHO

I agree... if I had caught the thieves stealing my stuff... they would have prayed the cops would have found them first.

Good and Happy Wednesday to you my friend!!

It always astounds me really....people that take/steal.

I have a good friend who is in the process of opening her own clothing store. She is a hard worker (works her tail off at the local coffee shop) and is pouring her heart, soul and savings into this endeavor. Everything was going smoothly ...until someone from NC stole her identity and messed up her credit. Now her dreams are on hold until this mess gets cleared up..and it could take a lonnnggg time before that happens. I feel so bad for her...she feels so violated.

I am also astounded that more people don't believe in karma....seriously...do bad things and it comes right back to you.

UPDATE - There's only ONE place that I've gone that has my number on a receipt. I verified that this morning. THE DOCTORS OFFICE! That bothers me to absolutely NO END!

When I'd asked the receptionist if a person uses a credit or debit card and signs one copy and gets their copy, does the signed copy (that they keep) have the whole number on it. She said, "Hm, you know, I don't know. Let me look at one that I just did.... Yes. It does. Uh oh. Is there something wrong?" And I explained the story. She transferred me to the office manager. The receptionist was extremely concerned... But the manager didn't give a rats @ss. I asked the same question to her about the copy they keep. She said yes. I told her a short version of what happened (incl. that it was medical supplies, etc). Her IMMEDIATE reaction was, "Can you prove that it was someone from here?" I simply told her no, but that's not my job and the bank is the one that will be investigating it.

Last but certainly not least... The place that was ordered from... Is in the UK. It makes me wonder a bit if this isn't (partially) medication that isn't legal here or not legal yet.

I'm sorry you had this happen. However, one item of note, many companies have a receipt with your whole number on it; it is how they can validate the charge. It is shifting so that the number is not stored locally nor hard copy, but somebody somewhere that you don't know or want to have your number will have the number during the transaction.

I still prefer a credit card to cash, however, since you can dispute a charge whereas cash, once gone is very hard to find.

All the places I go to everyday and use my card, do not have record of my number. I am positive of that. It goes directly to my bank unless ran as a credit card and not a debit card. There's only been one place that has ran it as a credit card... That was my Dr's office.

That definitely narrows it down. However, just from a paranoid point of view, there could have been one of the card swipe devices at some location or even a security video that allowed someone to read your card number. I'm not saying it wasn't the Dr's office, but unfortunately there are way too many ways for a smart thief to get someone's info.

I was scammed once when someone randomly typed my number into an on-line store. The item was sold even though they got the expiration date incorrect, the type of card (Mastercard Vs Visa), the name, etc. All they needed for that transaction was a number. Needless to say, I got my money back from the bank.
